There will be a vigil held on Sunday at 7:00 PM at Klein Forest High School, 11400 Misty Valley Dr, Houston, TX 77066. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Omar’s family with funeral expenses.

The Houston Chronicle reports, “A Klein Forest High School student who had worked hard to catch up so he could cross the stage Saturday died in a car accident on his way to the ceremony.

The accident happened on Interstate 45 at Main at 7:10 a.m., just two hours before the high school held its ceremony at NRG Stadium.

Danielle Williams, 18, was celebrating with her family when she learned of her classmate’s death on Twitter. She put down her phone, walked outside and started to cry. “He was so excited to graduate,” said Williams, who talked to Rodas at the commencement rehearsal Thursday . She described him as a “good person to be around” who made his friends laugh and worked hard to make sure he could graduate with them.

Friends identified the student as Omar Rodas. In the weeks leading up to graduation, Rodas had stayed after school for hours every day to earn enough credits to receive his diploma with his friends, said Brandon Cortes, 18, who had known him since third grade.

“He wasn’t going to make it at first, but he did it,” Cortes said. “He was really excited that all his hard work had paid off.”
