The Woodlands Resort & Spa | The Woodlands
This is a favorite retreat for my husband and I. Nestled in the woods, yet conveniently close to the posh restaurants and shopping of The Woodlands, The Woodlands Resort is a great place to get away without being too far away. You can walk for miles around their pristine golf course and Harrison lake, lounge in the pool with a handcrafted cocktail, float on an inner-tube through the lacadaisical waterscape (bring sunscreen!), or get a relaxing massage in the spa. If fresh air and relaxation are what you need, this romantic hotel is guaranteed to please. NOTE: We’re planning another visit in July, so look for a detailed review with photos this summer!

Love nature? Enjoy fitness? You’ll adore this luxury resort right off Buffalo Bayou and next door to Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. Decorated with rich woods, natural stone, and lavish fabrics and textures, this is one of the most visually stunning hotels in the Houston area. Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center | Galveston Island
This is another seaside dream location, and another that my husband and I really enjoyed. In fact, we’ve stayed there a few times. We got the Explore Moody Garden’s Couples Package, which includes a comfortable room and two passes (good for two days) to Moody Gardens’ famous island pyramids. I absolutely adore this place! My favorite pyramid has always been the Rainforest Pyramid, although the Aquarium Pyramid has a glass tunnel through a huge aquarium teaming with life (including sharks!). There is a 3D Theater, 4D Theater, Discovery Museum, Colonel Paddlewheel Boat, Palm Beach (seasonal), and Valet parking also included. I’d recommend Moody Gardens particularly during the winter months because there are so many fabulous indoor activities. Rain or shine, you’ll be entertained all day long.

South Shore Harbour Resort | Bay Area / Clear Lake
Back in my days as a chanteuse, I used to play piano and sing at the Paradise Reef Restaurant in South Shore Harbour Resort. The restaurant (and many of the hotel rooms) overlooks the 1,200-slip South Shore Harbour Marina on Clear Lake. The hotel rooms are decorated in a marine theme with a contemporary twist. There’s a chic marina-side pool with swim-up bar and private cabanas, and in addition to the Paradise Reef Restaurant you’ll also enjoy the luxurious Lighthouse Bar & Bistro which boasts a spectacular lighthouse view. Nearby, you can golf at the South Shore Harbour County Club (which boasts a beautiful 27-hole private course), visit the Gulf Greyhound Park, or take a gander on the famous Kemah Boardwalk. Space Center Houston / Johnson Space Center is also nearby.

Messina Hof Winery Bed & Breakfast | Bryan
My husband and I loved Messina Hof B&B in Bryan, just a short county drive away. It’s a small renovated 70’s era hotel that (from the outside) reminded me a bit of the British television hotel, Fawlty Towers. No ridiculous shenanigans unfolded here though and the customer service was superb. We even got to meet the owners who often breakfast at The Villa. Each room in the hotel is decorated with antiques, and many feature wooded or lake side balcony views. The best part of Messina Hof though is without doubt the winery. You can take a tour of the facility and the vineyard, enjoy a wine tasting at the bar and gift shop, and indulge in a divine meal at The Vintage House Restaurant. We visited in February, but depending on the time of year there are all kinds of fun events from wine tastings to grape stompings to annual wine festivals. Check the website to plan your visit accordingly.

Omni Houston Hotel at Westside | West Houston / Katy
Elegant guest rooms are designed to create a peaceful haven with earthy tones, and many of them overlook a tranquil lake or water gardens. Reservations are recommended at the Omni Café on the Lake restaurant, which is nestled in a tropical atrium of exotic greenery and an expansive sparkling Koi pond. The Black Gold Bar offers a rustic Texas charm. There is a modest fitness center and crystalline pool so you can stay active during your visit. Thanks to the Omni Kid’s Crew, children receive a backpack filled with fun items such as crayons, coloring books, binoculars, and games. Plus they get milk and cookies delivered to their guest room on the first night. Although, if you’re planning a romantic getaway, a babysitter is your ticket.
