Galveston, Texas — This is a wild story. 12 year old Fidel Hernandez is an autistic boy who mysteriously went missing in Galveston in the wee hours of the morning. His mother says he was last seen at his family’s Port Bolivar home a little after midnight. Around 4:30 AM, she went to check on him, but her child was gone.
Now, KHOU reports that young Fidel has been found, and the circumstances are just short of miraculous. He’s alive, but suffering from hypothermia and no doubt exhaustion.
Texas EquuSearch reports that searchers on the beach spotted a child in the water about 100 yards off shore. A Galveston County sheriff’s deputy dove into the cold sea water, and was able to reach him. He was able to put a life jacket on Fidel, and then a boat took him to shore.
No one is sure how long Fidel was treading water so far out in a bayou on the east side of Loop 108, which connects Port Bolivar with Texas 87.
Fidel is now recovering at University of Texas Medical Branch hospital in Galveston.
